April 5, 2014

OTTAWA, April 3rd, 2014 – Senator Claude Carignan, Leader of the Government in the Senate, is pleased that the Senate has passed the latest report of the Standing Committee on Conflict of Interest for Senators. The report contains amendments to the Conflict of Interest Code for Senators.

These amendments include strengthening preventive measures under the code, and codifying a fair and balanced inquiry process. “These measures build on actions taken by our government to modernize the Senate institution”, said Senator Carignan. “The new code will also put forward disciplinary measures and sanctions that the Committee may recommend to the Senate. We said that we would improve the Senate ethics rules, and we have delivered”, added the Senator.

“Passing these amendments to the Conflict of Interest Code for Senators is an important step forward and underlines our government’s efforts to modernize the Senate”, said Senator Carignan. “I would like to thank the Chair of the committee, the Hon. Raynell Andreychuk, for her excellent work and that of her committee”, concluded the Senate Government Leader.
