Senator Nolin appointed Speaker of the Senate
OTTAWA, November 26th, 2014 – Senator Claude Carignan, Leader of the Government in the Senate, would like to congratulate Senator Pierre Claude Nolin on his appointment as Speaker of the Senate of Canada.
“I think I speak for all Honourable Senators when I extend congratulations to Senator Nolin on this appointment. I have no doubt he will bring the same sense of service and duty to the role of Speaker as he has always done as a Senator,” said Senator Carignan today.
A lawyer for the last thirty years, Senator Nolin has served as a member of numerous committees during his time in the Senate including the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
Senator Nolin’s committee work also includes the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration; the Standing Committee on National Security and Defence; the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade; the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament and the Senate Special Committee on the Anti-Terrorism Act, to name a few.
Senator Nolin has also taken on various leadership roles in the Senate and on November 20th, 2013 was unanimously elected by his peers as Speaker pro tempore of the Senate.
Senator Nolin, who represents the Senatorial division of De Salaberry, was appointed to the Senate on the recommendation of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on June 18, 1993. He succeeds Noel Kinsella, who retired today, to become the 47th Speaker of the Senate of Canada.
