OTTAWA, April 24th, 2014 – “It is with a heavy heart that I make this statement today on the passing of my friend and colleague Pierre Claude Nolin.
Pierre Claude recently became the Speaker of the Senate but he was an important figure in public life for many decades. Although his time as Speaker was brief, in true “PC” fashion, he managed to leave his mark.
For me personally, Pierre Claude was an inspiration, a mentor. I knew him to be a man of great vision, who could draw on historical knowledge of our parliament and constitution to remain steadfast in his commitment to both preserve and modernize the institution he loved so very much.
While Pierre Claude was a member of our Conservative family, he was respected on both sides of the aisle because of his fierce independence. He will be remembered by each and every one of his Senate colleagues for his integrity, knowledge, wisdom and determination.
Pierre Claude’s passing is a great loss to this institution but it is nothing in comparison to the loss being felt by his loved ones.
It is with real emotion and tenderness that I extend my deepest sympathies to Pierre Claude’s wife Camille, his children Simon, Louis and Virginie and his grandchildren.
On behalf of our entire Conservative caucus in the Senate, I offer you our condolences.”
