Senator Eaton chosen Speaker pro tempore
OTTAWA, June 2, 2015 – Senator Claude Carignan, Leader of the Government in the Senate, would like to congratulate Senator Nicole Eaton on her appointment as Speaker pro tempore of the Senate of Canada.
Senator Eaton, who was elected unanimously by her peers, takes over as successor to the Honourable Senator Leo Housakos following his appointment as Speaker of the Senate last month.
“The Honourable Nicole Eaton is a very dedicated Senator perfectly suited to the position of Speaker pro tempore. I am confident her well-known diplomatic skills will enable her to fulfill her duties in the Senate with dignity, honour and impartiality”, said Senator Carignan.
Honourable Nicole Eaton has been a member of several Senate committees, including Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Human Rights, the Library of Parliament, and National Finance.
Carignan went on to praise the new Speaker pro tempore for her work outside the Senate as well, which includes pro bono philanthropic work with the St, Michael’s Hospital Foundation, the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, the National Ballet of Canada and the Gardiner Museum.
“Nicole Eaton’s philanthropic work in her community is the embodiment of what it is to be a Senator,” said Carignan.
Senator Eaton has represented Ontario in the Senate since her appointment to the Upper House by the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, on January 2, 2009.
