Conservative Senate Caucus Elections

March 28, 2017

Ottawa, March 28, 2017 – Today the Conservative Senate Caucus elected Senator Larry Smith as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Leader of the Conservative Senate Caucus. Senator Smith will take up his duties on April 1, 2017.

This election comes after Senator Claude Carignan announced on February 28th that he was stepping down as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Leader of the Conservative Senate Caucus.

Senator Yonah Martin was re-elected as Deputy Leader, and Caucus also elected Senator David Wells as Caucus Chair.

“I am honored to have been chosen by my peers to lead our talented Conservative team in the Senate”, said Senator Smith. “As we have been doing since the last election, we will engage in constructive opposition and continue to keep the Liberal government accountable to Canadians.”

He added: “Since 2011 when it held the majority the Conservative Senate Caucus has worked tirelessly to turn the Senate into a more modern, transparent, accountable and efficient institution. We have already made great strides and will pursue our efforts.”

Deputy Leader Senator Yonah Martin said: “I would like to thank my colleagues for their confidence. The Conservative team will continue to reflect the concerns of Canadians in the Senate.”

Lastly, Senator Wells, new Conservative Caucus Chair, indicated: “I am very pleased to undertake this work. We have a terrific team, and we ensure that the Official Opposition in the Senate plays its role fully.”

The Whip and Deputy Whip positions will be filled later this week.
